No shit, Sherlock. I feel like moving can never go 100% smoothly because it would upset the cosmic balance. Something always has to screw up. As it has been since the dawn of man, when Grogk decided to move from a basement cave to a nicer cave with a view. But while he was carrying his buffalo hide up the mountain he dropped it and it tumbled down into a primordial lava bit.
Now for the saga of my move. #saga
The original plan (hahaha): drop a few random things off in the apartment at 5pm on the 1st, sleep at the hotel with my mom that night. New furniture delivery on the 2nd which includes a table and pull-out couch, sleep there. At some point in the week my stuff from NY will arrive, hopefully before the 5th but who knows.
What actually happened: New furniture is delayed until next week, even though we ordered it two weeks in advance. "Guess I'll go to Target and buy an air mattress," I thought. Then my NY movers called me and they're here early. Good, but also bad because I can't get into my apartment until 5pm (according to lease). I call, email, messenger pigeon, smoke signal my landlord to see if there's anyway we can get in early. Crickets. So now I have a Scottish mover annoyed and not wanting to wait around for 8 hours because he's got places to go and shit to deliver. Luckily he was a nice guy, but we were all pretty annoyed at the situation.
Then I have an idea! What if we got a U-Haul truck, unloaded my stuff into that, movers can go on their way, we park the U-Haul somewhere until 5pm, then unload it ourselves. The Scotsman likes this idea very much (we thought he was Irish this whole time, but later learned he was Scottish). Scotsman says he found a truck, so we drive to that U-Haul place. JK, they have no trucks. Then I call U-Haul people and they say "oh this place over here has a truck ready right now." So my mom and I, with a giant 18-wheeler moving truck in tow, go to this other place to get a truck. JK, they have no trucks either. NOW I get connected to U-Haul traffic schedulers and they say "oh yeah, the only truck is in another city. You can get that one." Well that sucks.
THEN the guys working at the auto yard that did not have a truck we reserved, come out and offer their big garage. We can store the stuff in their garage, where it'll be locked up, until 5pm when they WILL have a truck available. Ok, let's do that. Scotsman is happy because he can get on his way and I'm happy because I can stop driving to every U-Haul location in the Greater Savannah area.
Now I am sitting in the hotel, all my worldly possessions are in an auto shop garage, and I am waiting for 5pm when hopefully my landlord gives me keys.
Update: it did!
